Articulated Dust Collector Arm

Page 2: Tools and Parts

This project was designed to be completed using tools most woodturners have available.

Tools Needed:

  • Hack saw
  • Drill
  • Drill bits (1/4", 5/16", 5/8" Forstner (optional), 1" Forstner or larger to be specified later.
  • Vise (or REALLY REALLY REALLY strong hands) No, seriously... Get a vise, you should have one anyway.
  • Wrench (Socket, Ratchet, Adjustable... Whatever you've got available)
  • Phillips Screw Driver
  • Hammer
  • Some method of sawing wood to length

Parts List: (All available at Lowe's/ Depot or other common hardware outlets)
I've personally been able to find all needed parts at Lowe's and True Value Hardware stores. Much of this you may have already laying around. Your mileage may vary.

  • (1) 3/4" x 3' Steel weldable square tube
  • (1) 1" x 36"-ish metallic conduit (or any old steel or galvanized pipe that you may have laying around of similar size and approx. length. I used an old bit of rusty steel pipe from a heating system. Doesn't have to be pretty and length and diameter are approximate. I believe that 1" to 1 1/4" OD is optimal and 36" length is purely arbitrary. A few inches shorter will be just fine in most cases.)
  • (7) 1/4-20 x 2" Hex Bolts
  • (1) 1/4-20 T-Nut (if unavailable use 3/8" T-Nut and substitute one 3/8-16 x 2" Hex Bolt for one of the 1/4-20 Hex Bolts)
  • (1) Piece of flat 1"x 1/4"iron stock approximately 7" long. This will hold the arm to the post and should be sturdy enough to support the arm. A heavy duty 6"x6"x1/4" thick angle iron will work very well also, just cut approx 4" off one end.
  • (16) Flat Washers for 1/4-20 bolts
  • (4) 1/4" Split Lock Washers (x4)
  • (6) 1/4-20 Nuts *NOTE: Nylon Nuts may be substituted for 4 of the std. nuts and lock washers eliminated if desired
  • (8) 2" wood or drywall screws (your choice)
  • (1) 4" plastic vac hose or dryer vent hose
  • (3) 6" pieces of 2x4 or, preferably, a hardwood equivalent. (I used some poplar that was lying around but that or any hardwood will suffice.)
